(Yes, I'm still a smart-ass!) I'm using TextFugu, an online self-teaching site. The intro part is free, but it's paid beyond that. So if I feel like it's working for me, I'll continue it while I'm taking the class in college. Maybe it'll work for you, too? It's learning the initial sounds and matching them to the correct character that was hard for me. Unfortunately, i had to drop the class and never got around to picking it back up...sigh.
